In a Recession, one would think…

One would think that our first lady, Michelle Obama, would represent our country by wearing more affordable threads. However, she traveled to London looking like a fashion plate by wearing a $2,500 coat by Thakoon that was specifically designed for her, a pair of Jimmy Choo heels ($770), and for evening wear, she wore a dress by her favorite designer, Jason Wu (which probably costs $1,000), a Michael Kors jacket (more reasonable), and a Azzedine Alaia belt (again, very pricey).

Now, I understand that Mrs. Obama wants to put forth the best image for her country, but the fashion that she selected is extremely expensive. She could have resorted to classic and beautiful looks from J.Crew, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Theory, Eileen Fisher, or Macy’s label INC. These outfits would have been less expensive and still have a degree of elegance.

This is not taking a partisan swipe, because if it were Laura Bush spending an excessive amount of money on her wardrobe during an economic downfall, you better believe I would be calling her out on this as well. Mrs. Obama is very well dressed, and there is no doubt that she brings back a taste of Jackie Kennedy’s fashion to the mix. However, it could have been done in a more cost effective way.

For example:

From Banana Republic, Mrs. Obama could get a beautiful coral dress, a complementary brown open cardigan, a gorgeous pearl necklace and gold leather heels (from Kenneth Cole or Chinese Laundry). The total would be under $200.

You can still look classy by shopping at normal retailers and look like the belle of the ball.

  1. I think you are just a tad bit too hasty in your judgement calls on the GM deal and the economy. The President has a full plate after all and he is doing the best he can. Let’s take a breather and just wait and see how the GM deal shakes out, ok? I know that the President saw some possible weakness in the automobile giant’s plan and wanted to “tweak it a bit,” to make it better. I agree with him that GM needs to be more aggressive on coming up with a plan to improve thier automobile line…make it more fuel efficient and better for the environment. Let’s give GM that chance and let’s continue to support the President in his efforts to find a way to help the economy recover in a responsible fasion that does not continue the past 3 decades of greed and living beyond our means. I implore you to wait and see what deal is made at this week’s G-20 Conference in Europe. Later…out…..

  2. Mac,

I will not sit by and watch our President destroy our economy and treat our government like it is a nanny state. So, I will continue to report freely on how I feel about this administration. Another thing, did the Democrats support Bush through the War in Iraq or when it came to certain tax cuts? No, they were a thorn in his side, and I intend to give the Democrats the same treatment of being a thorn in their side.

Thankfully, this might be a short four year term and fiscal responsibility will return to The White House. Obama is shaping up to be a disaster, and our country will be paying for his mistakes in the long run.

  3. It’s not automobiles that need improving. GM makes a fine product. Furthermore, Obama shouldn’t try to cloud the voters minds into thinking that how enviro friendly a car is, is either the cause or the solution to this problem. The problem was a combination of poor management and greedy unions who bled the detroit automakers dry by forcing them to pay wages which were too high and to provide workers with a myriad of benefits that were unsustainable if the company was to continue making a profit.

  4. As for GM, the product does not need improving. The marketing strategy and getting the UAW and government out of their business needs to be improved. I see where you are coming from Falling Panda and to some extent, Mac.

Obama’s economic theories simply prove his inexperience. He hired an incompetent Secretary of Treasury, and he is starting to show his socialist stripes. This is exactly why I come out against Obama every day. We live in a country built on freedom, not a fascist republic.
