Show me the $$
Show me the $$. The race for Governor in Virginia is all about the benjamins, and now, we are starting to see large amounts of donations coming in from out-of-state to both Bob McDonnell and Terry McAuliffe. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that McDonnell has received a $1 million check from the Republican Governors Association, and Terry McAuliffe has received $475,000 from two unions. This only means that this race is shaping up to be one of the most expensive governor’s races in state history.
However, it does prove a slightly interesting statistic that the unions believe that Virginia is a state that they can take back, and they are willing to give as much as they can to prevent McDonnell from being Governor. Virginia is a right-to-work state with a solid reputation as being good for business, and there is no doubt that the unions be trying everything in their power to have the Right to Work Law repealed. In fact, the Democrats nationwide are starting to pay attention to this and the Democratic Governor’s Association, led by Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer (ironically, Montana is NOT a right-to-work state), is funneling tons of money, paid TV and radio ads, newspaper ads, and canvassers into Virginia through a PAC known as Common Sense Virginia.
There is no doubt that all of the races (Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General) will be extremely competitive over the next few months, and a constant stream of money will be coming into these races as well.
