Mayor Bloomberg: Go Back to New York!
I am certain that you have had heard the term NIMBY (Not In My Backyard). Well, this term needs to apply to out-of-state leaders, who think they can intrude on the rights of those who bear arms in Virginia, and who can legally purchase firearms at gun shows. Mayor Michael Bloomberg made a visit to Virginia, where he decided to make false claims about former Attorney General and candidate for Governor, Bob McDonnell. Bloomberg indicated that Virginia’s gun laws contributed to the Virginia Tech massacre, and he even decided to spend some money on some a TV ad that the laws are not stringent and tying them to the tragedy.
Maybe, we need to review some background here. The killer bought the guns at a gun shops here in Virginia, and he passed the background checks. At that time, the mental health reporting was not as stringent, compared to what it is now. After the tragedy, there was a great deal of bipartisanship when Governor Kaine and Bob McDonnell worked together to close the gun show loopholes. They both worked together to ensure tougher background checks (especially focusing on not allowing those with mental illness to own a gun).
Kaine was asked to cite issues on which he agrees with Republican gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell, the former attorney general. Kaine noted the cooperation between his administration and McDonnell’s attorney general’s office in crafting reforms to the state mental-health system after the Virginia Tech slayings in April 2007.”–”Kaine Hopes to Work with GOP on Jobless Benefits” Richmond Times-Dispatch. Perhaps, Mayor Bloomberg should head back to New York and handle business within his own city. He has no right to intervene in Virginia politics. On an aside, we have the right to bear arms, granted to us in the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, and Bloomberg should remember this right should not be intruded by the government.

“He has no right to intervene in Virginia politics. On an aside, we have the right to bear arms, granted to us in the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution”….
Commendable how easily you can ignore the first Amendment
Doesn’t Bloomberg have taxes to raise and a growing illegal labor problem in his own city to take care of?
Bloomberg will do well to remember that Tim Kaine is our elected governor and Bob McDonnell was our elected Attorney General. We have a duly elected House of Delegates and Senate that passes laws in our Commonwealth. Mayor Bloomberg is free to travel where he wishes and to speak his mind as he is lead to believe. However, he has no authority (legal or otherwise) to attempt to change the laws in Virginia considering he is not a resident of our great Commonwealth. My view is his remarks should be viewed with the note that he is a private citizen traveling to Virginia utilizing his First Amendment rights.
Where Bloomberg crossed the line was attempting to link a specific action of one individual to the Code of Virginia as enacted by the House of Delegates and the Senate and signed by the Governor. His so called “moral high ground” ended with this sort of collectivist nonsense. The mayor seems to be forgetting that an individual is responsible for the choices and decisions he/she makes. To imply otherwise is to say that pencil manufacturers are responsible for lead poisoning. (I’m sure he’s thought of that one too.) Mikey, my friends, is NO Rudy Giuliani and I’m not a fan of Rudy.
No doubt, he is free to travel and speak as he wishes. Merely, I was making the point that he should fix New York City’s problems before coming down to Virginia and sticking his nose in our business.
I’m surprised Bloomberg is even bothering to attack One Gun Bob on this issue – don’t they agree?
