The Burqa Crusade

The French are at it again.  Women’s liberation is a never-ending struggle; especially when so many women remain unaware that they need liberating.  Following 6 months of hearings before the French Parliament, as well as a host of other obstacles, the Sarkozy government perseveres in France’s ongoing crusade against one of the most dastardly institutions of patriarchal misogyny: the Burqa:

The French Government aims to outlaw the wearing of full veils on state premises and on public transport.

President Sarkozy laid down future action on the burqa, as it is popularly known, on Wednesday in an attempt to end a feud in his centre-right Union for a Popular Movement (UMP) and calm passions in and outside France’s large Muslim population. Following the controversy, France is backing away from an outright ban on Muslim women covering their faces.

Mr Sarkozy, all main parties and most of the public are opposed to women wearing full veils but, after six months of parliamentary hearings, it has become apparent that a blanket ban would be unworkable and likely to backfire.

Amazing.  Even with agreement among all main parties, a full ban is still deemed impossible.   How peculiar.  What can be made of this?  The Guardian‘s Nabila Ramdani provides some clarity:

Despite this, Sarkozy left us in little doubt that all those who wear face coverings – whether burqa or niqab – are Muslims living in a country which increasingly expects everyone to “adapt” to the Gallic way. It was certainly no coincidence that the clampdown on religious symbols in state schools which began in 1994 centred on Muslim headscarves. Sixteen years on, the only reason Sarkozy has stopped short of a full burqa ban is because he thinks it would be thrown out by appeal courts under European human rights legislation.

Such legal challenges would be a huge embarrassment to Sarkozy, especially during his rightwing government’s ill-conceived national identity debate which is allowing racist and Islamophobic views to masquerade as 21st-century patriotism. Even anti-terrorism judges have captured the increasingly hostile nature of the arguments by saying that a full ban on the veil would lead to an increase in Islamic extremism.

It now appears that the French are just assuming their usual fallback position–surrender.  So typical, but with a modern P.R.-minded twist.  In the old days, the French would merely surrender to protect whatever holding of land they still held; or for the sake of their own lives; but now, the French surrender in order to protect the image of their President.  How could going after a discreet minority of Muslims be considered a major P.R. defeat.  After all, the French, like much of the West have displayed great courage when shoving secularism down the throat of practitioners of any other religion.  What’s the difference?  Ramdani explains:

Under such circumstances the real issue raised by Sarkozy’s burqa ban – and especially the watered down version – is not the freedom of the handful of few women who wear full veils (less than 2000 and most of them confined to isolated housing estates, according to all reliable estimates), but the very place of Islam in modern France. By targeting his tokenistic policies and soundbites at a harmless minority, Sarkozy and his cronies succeed in linking Islam with everything from sexism to national security threats. If these associations are genuine, then they should be dealt with in a manner which is honest and unambiguous. Anything less results in weak compromises engendering nothing but fear and suspicion, often without anybody really understanding why.

Oh, now we get it.  It’s because Islam is linked to terrorism, a serious national security concern for many Western nations.  Linking Islam’s tendency for blatant sexism makes anyone who opposes these bans both a sexist and a supporter of terrorism.  This is truly a clash of civilizations–a crusade if you will.  But let us not think of that in the Medieval sense, rather, this goes back to the idea of women’s freedom.  Given this, why  do so many persist in acting as if they are wrestling with some profound conundrum.  This is about proper gender roles, which transcends all discussions of religion, culture and morality.  Those not convinced may require some guidance.  Luckily, we have Inside Politics Daily‘s Bonnie Erbe to provide a strong independent American woman’s perspective:

…the issue of the burqa, what it symbolizes and how it resonates with immigration policies here in the U.S., raises some serious questions. Is it a sign of repression, even when the wearers aver they have “chosen” to don it? What is the impact of a woman’s wearing of a burqa or a headscarf on other women in that society? These are deeply personal questions to which every woman (and man) will have a very different answer.

Yes, that does sound like a very difficult and very personal issue to examine.  Especially when this very personal question jumps out of the “personal” box and becomes impersonal, affecting everyone.  We are indeed fortunate to have a worldly woman (and not a knee-jerk social conservative), who has been to the Middle East multiple times, to share her deep observations of this boundary-shattering matter:

when visiting countries such as Egypt and Morocco, where native women cover all but their faces, I am not likely to go out in public in shorts and a T-shirt, as I do here at home. Some culturally tone deaf Western tourists do dress as if they’re touring Disneyland, but most have the presence of mind to cover up somewhat, out of respect for another country’s culture, beliefs and tradition.

And let us not forget Ms. Erbe’s most important input, an account of her feelings on Muslim women in in Western Countries like the United States

I often wish Muslim immigrant women would repay the courtesy here in the U.S. Whenever I see a woman in full body garment or head scarf — and there are plenty of them in my community, where there are many immigrants — I take it as an affront.

I say this knowing it is highly controversial to do so, but it feels to me as if they are holding American women back. The women in my neighborhood do not cover their faces, but many go outside — even in the stifling Washington, D.C., summers — in full-body coverings. I wish they would adopt a “When in Rome . . .” approach and make full use of the freedoms granted to women in this great nation.

What is wrong with these Muslim Women.  I mean, look at them.  Look at all their piety, their dignity and their pride.

Who do they think they are?  Erbe continues, “In fact, I wish the U.S. would pre-screen for women who want to take full advantage of the freedoms they gain by moving from a society that represses women to one that does not.”

Notice Erbe’s undertone of suspicion when discussing the fact that many Muslim women in the western world insist on wearing traditional Muslim attire:

I have interviewed American Muslims, both immigrants and native-born converts, who say they choose to wear headscarves or full-body coverings. Some of them are highly educated and could easily have chosen not to do so. But, to me, many of them seemed to have ulterior motives — motives based on acceptance into a community or by a man who provides emotional or financial support. A true choice? Perhaps, but a heavily freighted one as well.

Of course, Erbe’s suspicions, that oppressive patriarchal Muslim men are behind this sentiment, are correct.   Besides, who in their right mind would oppressively cover themselves

when you could experience the amazing exhileration of being a women in the greatest time ever, to be a woman?

Even weak attempts at seduction

pale in comparison to the enticing allure of strong independent women taking full advantage of the freedoms that women of the past have fought so hard to gain.

At least in the spirit of national unity, this issue places Erbe and many social conservatives on the same side.  This is an odd development when you consider that Christians used to be more sensitive to any sort of religious persecutions.  Besides, do full coverings not evoke images of bygone Christian glory days in the Southern United States?  Apparently, these allegiances are not based on styles of dress, instead  they are based on old time sentiment.

Obama's State of the Union could be a WILD Time

Guest Post by Modest Mouse

Tomorrow night, my time with the television will be rudely interrupted by President Obama’s address to the nation. The State of the Union address is like the People’s Choice Awards for Ugly People (yep, just like Washington, D.C. is the Hollywood for Ugly People…just not for Aaron Schock, Jeff Flake, Scott Brown, as they are the exception of the rule), where it becomes a who’s who amongst American politicians. The only good thing is that this speech highlights the President’s so-called agenda to destroy our liberties (CCC would appreciate this line…that’s why I am inserting it). Even though, I am not able to watch my typical programs, I will be watching this speech for one reason…the games that come from this blessed speech.

Now, I know the goody-two-shoe CCC will most likely be sitting at home watching the speech and live blogging it, because she’s a fan of this stuff and a complete nerd. On the other hand, I will be sitting at home doing my part by playing a game, while watching the speech. Obama’s speech is filled with one liners to create this exciting game. CCC and I had an interesting email exchange earlier about this, and I think she could be excellent at this game. Based on the ATR version of Obama BINGO, you can either drink an adult beverage (or more depending on tolerance), or be like CCC and drink Berry Blue Kool Aid (straight up…no alcohol). Since I am a party animal (unlike CCC…you nerd!), this is a game that will be lively considering the President’s remarks.  I actually had a difficult time deciding between Guinness and Natural Light, but since we are in an economic recession, I am leaning towards the cheaper stuff.

Here’s the email exchange:

Crystal Clear Conservative: Since you are proposing the so-called Obama game, I will sit around the house drinking Kool Aid (preferably Berry Blue without booze). For every time, Obama says, “Hope,” take a sip. Every time, he says, “Bailout,” take a gulp, and every time, he says, “Let me be clear,” SHOTGUN!

Modest Mouse: CCC, seriously! Do you have an inner wild child that you could tap into for this one game? You are worthy of spiked Kool Aid for this game. I agree with the terms you laid out in the first email, but we should add references to his Chief Tax Evader, Timothy Geithner and his economic dream team.

CCC: Honestly, you would be dead or close to death after those references, because Obama is likely to refer to them all night long. How about any mention of “too big to fail” or “tax cuts to working families?” You’re right, Modest Mouse, I need to have fun…sugar highs are much better. At least, I enjoy sugar highs.

Modest Mouse: Whatever, CCC! I guess you’ll be decked out in your pretty purple snuggie and live blogging with Kool Aid. So, I’ll sit around with an adult beverage enjoying this party. Hasta la Vista…Nerd! Oh yeah, since I am sharing this with everyone, please give CCC some encouragement and tell her to be bad for one night.

As you can see, this could be a fun game and ATR has some of the one-liners to look out for. BINGO is so much fun with President Obama and his teleprompter. Stop by here tomorrow night, as CCC and myself will be doing a series of live blogs. CCC will provide the analysis and I will be in charge of the entertainment value. Hey, since we are all inclusive, I will even invite the sexist 200 Grande to join our live blog, if he’s up to challenge.

"Fear the Boom and Bust" a Hayek vs. Keynes Rap Anthem

Enjoy.  You can find the complete lyrics at the EconStories.tv website but it’s probably best to just skip through to 3:20, bypassing the fluff to the real meat:

Hayek sings:

I’ll begin in broad strokes, just like my friend Keynes
His theory conceals the mechanics of change,
That simple equation, too much aggregation
Ignores human action and motivation

And yet it continues as a justification
For bailouts and payoffs by pols with machinations
You provide them with cover to sell us a free lunch
Then all that we’re left with is debt, and a bunch

If you’re living high on that cheap credit hog
Don’t look for cure from the hair of the dog
Real savings come first if you want to invest
The market coordinates time with interest

Your focus on spending is pushing on thread
In the long run, my friend, it’s your theory that’s dead
So sorry there, buddy, if that sounds like invective
Prepared to get schooled in my Austrian perspective

We’ve been going back and forth for a century
[Keynes] I want to steer markets,
[Hayek] I want them set free
There’s a boom and bust cycle and good reason to fear it
[Hayek] Blame low interest rates.
[Keynes] No… it’s the animal spirits

The place you should study isn’t the bust
It’s the boom that should make you feel leery, that’s the thrust
Of my theory, the capital structure is key.
Malinvestments wreck the economy

The boom gets started with an expansion of credit
The Fed sets rates low, are you starting to get it?
That new money is confused for real loanable funds
But it’s just inflation that’s driving the ones

Who invest in new projects like housing construction
The boom plants the seeds for its future destruction
The savings aren’t real, consumption’s up too
And the grasping for resources reveals there’s too few

So the boom turns to bust as the interest rates rise
With the costs of production, price signals were lies
The boom was a binge that’s a matter of fact
Now its devalued capital that makes up the slack.

Whether it’s the late twenties or two thousand and five
Booming bad investments, seems like they’d thrive
You must save to invest, don’t use the printing press
Or a bust will surely follow, an economy depressed

Your so-called “stimulus” will make things even worse
It’s just more of the same, more incentives perversed
And that credit crunch ain’t a liquidity trap
Just a broke banking system, I’m done, that’s a wrap.

We’ve been goin’ back n forth for a century
[Keynes] I want to steer markets,
[Hayek] I want them set free
There’s a boom and bust cycle and good reason to fear it
[Hayek] Blame low interest rates.
[Keynes] No it’s the animal spirits

“The ideas of economists and political philosophers, both when they are right and when they are wrong, are more powerful than is commonly understood. Indeed the world is ruled by little else. Practical men, who believe themselves to be quite exempt from any intellectual influence, are usually the slaves of some defunct economist.”

John Maynard Keynes
The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

“The curious task of economics is to demonstrate to men how little they really know about what they imagine they can design.”

F A Hayek
The Fatal Conceit

Since the United States is currently in super-Keynesian overdrive, take this with a sense of humor.  Enjoy the drinking-to-get-sober analogy appearing in this video.  But don’t fret.  Stay positive!  Here’s a ray of hope for the jobless.  As promised, it comes from Obama himself.  Just go outside, roll up your sleeves, and take up one of the many shovel-ready jobs.  This is one everybody can do.  It involves shoveling up the mega-tons of bullshit spewing from the mouth of our esteemed celebrity President.

One final thought and not to be so hard on old Keynes but, in his time, government spending was ultimately based on an industrial-based economy.  One wonders if there is a material difference when comparing the effects of government spending on an industrial-based economy versus today’s public-relations-based sheconomy.  Maybe China can be examined in this regard?

Super Bowl Predictions

Super Bowl is here! Yay! While my team, the Pittsburgh Steelers, are not in the quest for a seventh Super Bowl title, I feel that this particular game will be well represented by the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints.

The Indianapolis Colts are the AFC champions, and they defeated the New York Jets yesterday with a stellar offensive game. However, they need to play like this against the Saints in order to win the Super Bowl.

New Orleans won the NFC championship in overtime yesterday against a strong Minnesota Vikings team (at least, “Judas” Favre got his dues). Their key to victory will be to fire up Reggie Bush and to rely on their offensive prowess. However, you can’t rely on a 46-yard field goal to win a game.

My prediction on the final score: Indianapolis 27, New Orleans 14.

How Deep Is Your Love Disciplining Her?

Without further ado, let’s get back to the gender war….

A few months ago, a considerable amount of excitement was elicited by a thought-provoking discussion on domestic violence.  Considerable “thought” was provoked over “instruct[ing] men on the proper disciplining of their women.”  Many purportedly female commentators reacted in complete outrage at the mere mention of discipline providing women with “the release which comforts [their] deep-down self-loathing.”  When confronted with the idea that slapping works as a tool of discipline (no matter how much women want to deny it), commenter CoolKat righteously exclaimed:

Good, I’ll keep this in mind next time my husband steps out of line. I’m glad to know that violence is always the answer, as are other divisive, questionable power-move tactics in between people who should love and trust one another.

After I get done slapping the snot out of bastard, I’ll go flirt with a hot dude and then wait for my man to come crawling back to me, to eagerly await another loving helping of “correction” from me, whenever I should deem it necessary.

Examining the adorable image of women acting out as their own exaggerated caricatures of men, tells you a lot about these women.  In particular, you can begin to learn what these women actually want in a man.  When delving into this critical insight, it is important to discount and ignore anything a woman says about what she wants in a man.  Besides, who, in their right mind, takes what a women says seriously?  These women crave the hard, but loving slap of a man to steady the inner turmoil of their delightfully chaotic minds.

Not persuaded?  Oh, of course not.  Then why don’t you just…

…ask Rihanna about what kind of man attracts her.  She will say:

Definitely the high-risk (type),…I don’t like cream puff, corny guys. Usually they are the nice guys, the ones that won’t hurt you. They’ll pull out the chair for you and the whole nine yards. Everything is perfect and boring … I like the risk. I like the edge. That’s the thrill for me.

Men would do best to remember this the next time they think of practicing chivalry and the girl’s parents are nowhere in sight.  When the thought of practicing chivalry comes to mind, remember that by doing so, your actions will betray your thoughts because you will be

  • telling her what you regard as your greatest strength, so she will know how best to undermine you;
  • telling her of your greatest fear, so she will know what to force you to face;
  • telling her what you cherish most, so she will know what to take from you; and MOST IMPORTANTLY…
  • telling her what you crave, so that she might deny you.

IF that is too much, then simply remember this as the face of a woman in love.

Flip-Flop Gerry!

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) has decided to go against his campaign promises to repeal the 2001 federal tax cuts. I guess the crumbling state of the economy has really impacted Gerry or the fact that he knows he could lose the General Election in November.

According to a Dow Jones Wire Report, Connolly was quoted about the pending expiration of the 2001 tax cuts. He said, “I think there is a certain logic to leaving well-enough alone for now, given the fragility of the economic recovery. It’s a question of prudent judgment and timing.”

Connolly ran in 2008 on promises that he would raise taxes and revoke the 2001 tax cuts. Just last year, Connolly voted for the Stimulus and Omnibus spending bills, in addition to other pork-laden projects. With the tanking economy, he decided to change his stances for re-election purposes. He now wants to see the 2001 tax cuts extended.

Republican challenger Keith Fimian released this statement about Connolly’s change of heart.

“Apparently it takes unemployment above 10 percent and still rising to get Gerry Connolly to admit he’s been wrong on taxes. The simple fact is that Connolly does not know how jobs are created and has been recklessly irresponsible on fiscal and economic policy for years, from his time on the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors to his brief tenure in Congress. The only reason Connolly is changing his tune now is that his political career is at risk. Given his liberal record, we cannot take him at his word. At this rate, he’ll be calling himself a moderate by Valentine’s Day and a Reagan Republican by Easter.”

Flip-flop Gerry! I guess the name fits.

Governor Bob McDonnell to Deliver Republican Address to Nation

Governor Bob McDonnell will be delivering the Republican address to the nation, following the State of the Union Address on January 27th. McDonnell was invited to give this address by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) and House Republican Leader John Boehner (Ohio).

WASHINGTON, DC –House Republican Leader John Boehner (OH) and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (KY) announced today that Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell will give the Republican address following the President’s State of the Union address to Congress on January 27, 2010. Further details regarding location, coverage and exact time will be released in the days ahead.

In making the announcement, Leader Boehner noted the Governor’s leadership on the economy and offering solutions to help create jobs and put Virginians back to work:

“As the American people continue to ask, ‘where are the jobs,’ Gov. McDonnell has offered common-sense economic policies in stark contrast to Washington Democrats’ job-killing agenda. We don’t need a government takeover of health care or a ‘cap-and-trade’ national energy tax – we need a common-sense plan to help middle-class families and small businesses and allow them to keep more of what they earn so they can save, invest, and hire.”

Leader McConnell said the Governor understands the frustration of Americans and is a leader who offers common sense solutions:

“Gov. McDonnell understands that the American people are more interested in shrinking unemployment than expanding government. He is an impressive public servant and an excellent choice to offer Republican solutions for our country.”

NOTE: Bob McDonnell is the recently inaugurated 71st Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the 2009 gubernatorial campaign he received the most votes of any candidate for Governor in the history of Virginia. Prior to running for Governor, Mr. McDonnell served as the 44th Attorney General of Virginia. He represented the 84th District, Virginia Beach, in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1991-2005. Before his election to the House, McDonnell served as a prosecutor in the Virginia Beach Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office. He also served 21 years in the U.S. Army, both active duty and reserves, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1997. He is married to the former Maureen Gardner of McLean, and they have five children, ages 18-29. Their oldest daughter, Jeanine, recently completed service in the U.S. Army, including a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005-2006.

Chris Van Hollen's Insight

Shortly before Republican Scott Brown’s historic win of the US Senate seat formerly held by the late Ted Kennedy, MD Representative Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, posed the question:

Why would you hand the keys to the car back to the same guys whose policies drove the economy into the ditch and then walked away from the scene of the accident?

Chris?  You do realize that it was Ted Kennedy who did that?  Right?  It’s a good thing that this will be the man leading the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee in their 2010 efforts.

Victory in Massachusetts

Welcome U.S. Senator Scott Brown! This has been a long time coming, as Republicans have not elected a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts since Edward Brooke in 1972. He brings the total number of Republican Senators to 41, thus putting a thorn in President Obama and Harry Reid’s side.

This also sends a sign that people are growing further disenchanted with the President’s policies.

It is a good night for Massachusetts and America! Now, it is time to seat Senator Scott Brown!

Coakley's Loss is a Blow to Women

GUEST POST by B!tchzilla

The AP has announced that Republican, Scott Brown has defeated Democrat, Martha Coakley for the U.S. Senate seat vacated by the death of Senator Ted Kennedy.  Now, on to business…

It’s about time someone put up a strong progressive woman’s perspective on this blog.  CCC is okay, being a woman and all, but, as a libertarian, that just makes her a closet patriarch-enabler.

As a feminist, I think I am the best person to provide some perspective on Coakley’s gut-wrenching loss in Massachusetts.

First, and foremost, the voters of Massachusetts have a long history of misogyny.  Oh, what about Coakley being the state’s attorney general?  Please!  I’m talking about the misogyny of not sending women to represent on the most prestigious level of government: Congress!!  So, tonight’s loss comes as no surprise because as a progressive feminist, I am well aware that women are still a long way from achieving true equality.  Voters in Massachusetts and the whole country need to get over their anger at women.  Women make up nearly half the country and have no where near that much representation in Congress!  The problem is that there are just too many people in this country afraid of a strong woman!

Brown is a complete beast and an open mysogonist.  As a woman, I am so VERY UPSET by this turn of events!!  I am trembling in horror at the thought of this pig in office!!!  Why??!!  The proof is in the pudding:

With this staring them right in the face, I cannot believe how ignorant the voters of Massachhusetts are!

As a progressive woman, Brown’s insensitivity to rape victims and being anti-choice shows a complete ignorance of what it is to be a woman!  Furthermore, Brown’s positions are a means of enabling men to keep women under control, which is really just a fear of losing male privileges.  Men like Brown need to get a grip, act like men, and get over their fear of strong independent women!  Besides, these men are just a bunch of whiny little boys and real women prefer real men.  Frankly, they are just bitter because they cannot get with a woman.

Brown’s supporters are just a bunch of right-wing wackos.  The amount of open right-wing weirdos is becoming more and more frightening to me.  We need more laws to protect women from these lunatics!  Looks like that’s not going to happen for a while, now.  After all the progress we seem to have made, losing this seat, it’s like we’re going backwards.
