Consumer-in-Chief

Behold.  The most fabulous celebrity President, ever, is sowing negative press in the celebrity tabloids!

Please, before the ladies at Too Conservative scold, “how dare you bring this up in this new media milieu reserved for serious discussion,” let’s just remind ourselves to not kid ourselves.  If you believe that, then you probably believe that political campaigns are contexts for serious policy discussions (as if political campaigns “managed” by kidults does not hint otherwise).

Politics is nothing more than another breed of marketing campaigns tailored to a consumer culture.  Sell to the lowest common denominator (i.e., triangulate, or capture the greatest market share) and you win.  No particular election cycle influences another, and the turnout model remains static.  Sure, we say “elections have consequences,” but that is more of a perfunctory acknowledgment of what we think everyone else wants to hear.  Real aficionados like us know better, even though everyone thinks they are a real aficionado, and that they are in on the con!  It makes you wonder who really is the butt of the joke.

No consumer culture is complete without its celebrities.  They sell the things we, as consumers (not citizens) need to be.  Sales figures are highest when people are working, have money to spend, and engage in their patriotic duty to consume.  Recognize that this is also how we fight terror, since the terrorists hate our freedom (to buy stuff).  Marvel as the Party Animal-in-Chief conducts a campaign of conspicuous consumption:

Don’t hate.  Participate.

Do not make analogies to Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, or Nicholas II because that would be racist.  It would also be hate speech, and you do not want to be accused of that.  The President is doing this for us.  He is doing this to fight terror.  He is doing this to stimulate the economy.  Just be patient; soon he will get around to consuming you.

  1. You are a racist!

  2. Not Too Conservative

If the GOP wants to win elections, it must triangulate between the celebrity culture and realistic, common sense governance by advancing policies for pragmatic consumption. Republicans can do so while staying under the radar and not jumping the shark like Obama has done here.

  3. Conspicuous consumption is the essence of materialism and the epitome of all that is detrimental to the family.

  4. “Nothing says credibility like the Globe. What’s next, the story of the man who was stuck in a refrigerator and ate his own foot? Frankly, I am surprised that you didn’t just quote World Nut Daily or another of those bought-and-paid-for right wing rags.

Wait a second, no, I am not surprised.

    You stay classy now, conservatives!”

  5. Apparently, discussion of (how do you say?) celebrity culture and consumerism remains lost on Mark.

  6. This blog has no credibility citing tabloids like The Globe. Furthermore, I applaud patriots like Mark whose (obvious) consumption keeps America strong in its continuing fight against the terrorists. I would like to remind everyone that it was my administration that advanced this strategy.

I also urge all citizens to follow the lead of President Obama, Mr. Gates and Secretary Napolitano in protecting this great Nation. We need to follow their recommendations and do what they say (otherwise Osama bin Laden will come out from under your bed, and eat you).

Thank you and God Bless the United States of America.

  7. George W. Bush,

As the person who runs this site and writes for this site, I would like to dismiss your claim of saying this blog is not credible. There are other talented writers, who contribute to this site and actually credit news sources, like The Wall Street Journal. 200 Grande is entitled to cite whatever source he would like, regardless of how incredibly stupid the publication might be.

Why would we follow the lead of Obama, Gates, and Napolitano? Obama is leading our country in to a Second Great Depression with his flawed economic policies, Gates is nothing but a war monger (we are still fighting an unnecessary war and need to leave), and Napolitano is an airhead…plain and simple.

It is your choice to continue reading this blog. 200 Grande was merely using satire to make a point.
