Sen. Jim DeMint at the Defending the American Dream Summit
“It’s freedom that works in America.”-Sen. Jim DeMint
At the Americans for Prosperity Defending the American Dream Summit, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) was awarded the Washington Award. Speaking before a standing room only audience, DeMint spoke about the values our country was founded on: limited government, Judeo-Christian values, and limited taxation. He mentioned that the grassroots activists were instrumental in preventing the health care reform bills from being passed in Congress before the August recess. DeMint also mentioned that there is a greater need for principled and passionate leaders. DeMint reminded those attending the rally that we need to share the principles that our country was founded upon with others to continue shaping the paths of prosperity.
Wall Street Journal's Steve Moore at the Defending the American Dream Summit
The Wall Street Journal‘s Steve Moore spoke to the audience at the Americans for Prosperity Defending the American Dream Summit. Moore introduced Senator Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and he talked about the current economic and employment situation in America.
Moore mentioned that since the Stimulus legislation has been passed and signed into law, there have been close to 3.5 million jobs lost. Moore also mentioned that global warming is the greatest hoax over the past century and how more jobs will be lost under the cap and trade legislation.
Moore mentioned that we need to address the national debt. We have borrowed more money over the past forty years that we can not even fathom the actual figures of a trillion dollars. “We are spending money at such a reckless place, and one day, we will have to wonder what will happen if one day China and other countries stop bailing us out.” Within fifteen years, China will bypass America as an economic superpower.
Moore advocated for a flat or fair tax. Either tax would be good, and it would be like rocket fuel for our country.
In order to reform our health care system, Moore suggested three ideas. Moore has read the 1100 page health care bill.
- We need medical malpractice reform
- We need to move towards health savings accounts
- We need to allow people to buy insurance across state lines
This is a free enterprise, free market solution.
Newt Gingrich at the Defending the American Dream Summit
On Saturday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich spoke to the audience at the Americans for Prosperity Defending the American Dream Summit. Gingrich focused on the themes of where we are currently and where we need to go in the future to improve America’s prosperity, and he specifically focused on 1977 and 1993.
Gingrich mentioned that he felt Obama would work towards bringing more transparency and change to the federal government. However, Gingrich mentioned those hopes have been smashed by those from the socialist wing of the Democrat party. The unemployment has risen to 9.8%, and the promises of creating more jobs under the stimulus plan have been failed.
“The socialist wing of the Democratic party will lead the Democrats to one of the largest defeats in history,” Gingrich said. He contrasted this to 1977, when Jimmy Carter was elected President, when there were several embargoes imposed on oil and unemployment was at a high during that time.
Gingrich also mentioned that there is a strong need for candidate recruitment. These candidates need to be principled, conservative leaders. Gingrich encouraged those to take action and restore our country back to the values our country was founded upon.
The Obama Presidency has begun to wake people up and empower them to know that his policies are not right for the direction of our country’s prosperity.
Gingrich also discussed the International Olympic Committee decision not to allow the Olympics to come to Chicago. While Gingrich would have loved for the Olympics to come to Chicago in 2016, he mentioned that there was an even greater need for President Obama to be in the country to address the issues facing America domestically. Gingrich mentioned that the economy is failing and that we need to reform the tax code.
Bolling signs AFP's No Climate Tax Pledge
Here is the proof from my entry yesterday that Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling did indeed sign the Americans for Prosperity No Climate Tax pledge. Bolling has always been an advocate for taxpayers, and he will continue to look out for taxpayers by opposing wasteful spending at the government level.
Bolling said, “I oppose the federal energy tax (cap and trade) and would oppose any similar federal or state legislation that would result in a tax increase on American businesses and make them less competitive in the global marketplace.
