Bob Marshall Qualifies for U.S. Senate Primary

Yesterday, Delegate Bob Marshall (R-Manassas) delivered petitions to the Virginia State Board of Elections with more than 17,100 signatures to qualify him for the U.S. Senate Primary on June 12. Below is his statement:

“Thanks to much prayer and hard work, we achieved our goal,” Marshall (R., Manassas) said. “Now that I am on the ballot, my road to victory, as in the past, will depend on People Power to overcome Money Power. It will be the same in this primary election.

“The credit in reaching this goal goes to hundreds of grass-root volunteers who spent countless hours gathering petition signatures while I was busy on the people’s business in the Virginia General Assembly session.

“Since I announced my candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Jan. 12, these selfless, energetic and dedicated volunteers spent many hours collecting signatures by talking with friends, walking door to door, standing outside libraries and grocery stores, and attending political and civic meetings.

“We are setting dates for fund-raisers, state-wide mailings, media, signs and staff. Given the present state of the economy, I will demonstrate, as I have in all my past elections, that I am a candidate well-tested in running frugal campaigns and making every dollar count.”

Marshall has never voted for a tax increase since he was first elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1991.

In 2007, Marshall sued then-Gov. Tim Kaine and GOP leaders over a law establishing unelected taxing authorities. He prevailed when the Virginia Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the statute violated the Commonwealth’s constitution, blocking 14 new taxes in Northern Virginia and Tidewater.

“I had to buck the entire political establishment,” Marshall said, “but I knew my first allegiance was to the people. This is how I will serve in Washington, should the people elect me to represent them in the U.S. Senate.”

In 2010, Marshall authored Virginia’s “Health Care Freedom Act” being used by Virginia as the basis to sue the federal government over Obamacare.

“Free men and women cannot be ordered by government to purchase a product,” Marshall said.

Marshall also authored the “One-Man, One-Woman Marriage Amendment” to the Virginia constitution approved by voters in 2006.

“It is not hate speech to uphold standards for family affirmed by thousands of years of Judeo-Christian values,” Marshall said.
Marshall’s record shows he believes government must treat all human beings equally.

“Our Declaration of Independence states that all men are created, not born, equal,” Marshall said. “Our rights come from the hand of God, not man, and therefore no government is justified in removing the right to life, liberty or property from any person. This current president is so radically pro-abortion that he even voted against a law to provide medical help to children born alive after abortion. Tim Kaine would toe the Democrat party line in Washington, and I will do everything I can to prevent that.”

Kaine is the Democrats’ presumptive Senate nominee.

“Serious economic problems plague our country, robbing our children’s future and indebting our nation to foreign dictators,” Marshall said. “Do I think America can change direction? Absolutely! I would not be running for the Senate if I thought otherwise. Our Founders called for a moral people to animate government and preserve our freedom. If we want our freedom preserved, we must be eternally vigilant.”

Bob Marshall Announces U.S. Senate Bid

Today, Del. Bob Marshall (R-Manassas) announced that he will be running for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate.  According to a release from his campaign, Marshall believes he is the best candidate to beat Tim Kaine in the November General Election.

“I already have a ‘can do’ record of challenging Tim Kaine and winning in the public arena on major economic and social issues, and I can do it again,” Marshall (R., 13th District) said in a statement released this morning from his office in the General Assembly Building on Capitol Square, here.

Marshall ran for the Republican nomination in 2008, losing by one percentage point at the convention to former Gov. Jim Gilmore.

As a Delegate, Marshall has been instrumental in the Marriage Amendment to the Virginia Constitution, which voters ratified with 57 percent of ballots in the 2006 general election.  Marshall also wrote the Virginia Health Care Freedom Act of 2010, which was the basis of Virginia’s challenge to President Obama’s health care law.  You can learn more about the other successes Marshall has championed by clicking here.

Marshall is a staunch conservative, and there is no doubt that I believe he can defeat Tim Kaine in the November election.

Jamie Radtke Files for U.S. Senate

While this was anticipated for some time now, WTVR reports that Jamie Radtke, former Chairwoman of the Virginia Tea Party Patriots, filed the paperwork to run for U.S. Senate in 2012. Radtke joins former U.S. Senator George Allen, who is expected to run again for the seat currently held by Sen. Jim Webb.

Radtke’s name recognition is growing especially after the successful Virginia Tea Party Convention held in October, and she will definitely be a more conservative alternative to Allen. Riley over at Virginia Virtucon has a statement regarding her candidacy.

While I think Radtke offers conservative credentials, her name recognition is not nearly as well known as Corey Stewart or Bob Marshall. However, she could definitely provide a challenge to Webb, who has disappointed many Virginians with his votes in favor of President Obama’s agenda.

The Supposed Audacity of Hope (Del.-elect Patrick Hope…that is)

The Virginia General Assembly starts session next Wednesday, and we are already beginning to see fireworks from a Delegate-elect.  Recently, a friend of mine, Steve Bierfeldt (you may remember him from a TSA scuffle in Missouri), wrote an email to his newly elected House of Delegates member, Patrick Hope, to ask whether or not he would be supporting Delegate Bob Marshall’s bill to empower Virginians to not be forced into buying mandated health insurance. Hope had the audacity to respond sharply to Bierfeldt. Just read the exchange and be shocked by the response. I thought those we elected to serve us are actually supposed to do just that. I guess this does not apply to the 47th House District.

Mr. Hope

Will you be co-sponsoring or getting on board with Delegate Bob Marshall’s bill to empower Virginia residents to not be forced to buy mandated health insurance.

Steve – no, health insurance should be affordable and mandatory. Mandates will bring down the cost for people like you and me and you should be supportive. This will also make it affordable. Everyone, individuals and businesses, could use a little more savings in this economic environment.

Mr. Hope,

Thank you for responding to my email.

As someone who currently does not have health insurance by choice, the bill being discussed in the U.S. House and Senate includes penalties for people who do not comply, including prison time.

Are you going to help the government to put me in prison? Please be frank, is that what I can expect from my elected Representative for the next two years of your term?

- Steve

Now…for the response….

it acts like a tax and so if you don’t pay your taxes, over time, you could be facing jail time. Steve, please pay your taxes.

Wow…it takes audacity to be nasty to your constituents. I am pretty certain 2011 might not be so hopeful for Hope, as he runs for re-election.

Interview with Bob Marshall

This is the last in the CCC Interview series. Bob Marshall stopped by for an interview with me during last Saturday’s RPV Convention. Marshall stopped by to discuss the principles we need to embrace if we want to get back on track, how his campaign is going, and the issues we need to address. There is no doubt that we need more leaders like Bob Marshall, whether they are serving in Congress, at the State level, or on the local level. To learn more about Marshall, check out his website.

Before I forget, I would like to thank the House Republican Caucus for sponsoring the media studios, Steven Albertson and Cortland Putbrese for their work with the RPV New Media Committee, Greg of Black Velvet Bruce Li for his assistance and patience with someone who has no on-air interview experience, and those who have helped in making the mini media studio happen at the RPV Convention.
