Rooting Out Corruption in Our Judicial System
Guest Post by Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.)
It is a rare occasion when the U.S. Congress impeaches a federal judge and removes the accused from the bench. Indeed, only 15 federal judges have been impeached by the House of Representatives in our nation’s history. However, when evidence emerges that an individual is abusing his judicial office for his own advantage, the integrity of the judicial system becomes compromised, and the Congress has the duty to investigate the matter and take the appropriate actions to end the abuse and restore confidence in the judicial system.
Earlier this week a special U.S. Senate committee began the impeachment hearing of Judge G. Thomas Porteous, Jr., of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. As the Ranking Member of the House Task Force on Judicial Impeachment I serve as one of the lead prosecutors and have been presenting the case for Judge Porteous’s removal. Our case is based on four articles of impeachment, which charge Judge Porteous with intentionally making materially false statements and representations under penalty of perjury, engaging in a corrupt kickback scheme, soliciting and accepted unlawful gifts, and intentionally misleading the Senate during his confirmation proceedings.
Specifically, the four articles of impeachment charge that while on the federal bench, Judge Porteous refused to recuse himself from a case when he had previously engaged in a corrupt kickback scheme with the attorneys representing the defense; that he later took thousands of dollars in cash from those same attorneys while the case was pending; that he took gifts from a bail bondsman in exchange for granting favorable bond rates for him and then improperly expunged the records of two of the bail bondsman’s employees, one after he was confirmed by the Senate to be a federal judge; that he lied to a bankruptcy court when he filed for bankruptcy and then violated a bankruptcy court order mandating that he not incur further debt; and that he made materially false statements to the U.S. Senate and FBI during his confirmation process.
It is not a pleasant task to impeach a federal judge, yet when a judge abuses his office, it becomes necessary to take the appropriate action in order to restore the confidence of the American people in the judicial system. The Constitution gives the House of Representatives the power and responsibility to impeach federal judges and the Senate the power to remove the accused from office after a fair and impartial hearing. These are powers that Congress utilizes only in cases involving very serious allegations of misconduct. In every step along the way from the thorough investigation by the Task Force on Judicial Impeachment to the hearings held by the House Judiciary Committee and the evidentiary hearing in the Senate, we in Congress have worked in a bipartisan fashion to uncover the truth in order to root out corruption in our judicial system.
Listen to the Gipper
I think this video has a great message, enough that I do not need to put many words to it.
Rangel Goes Ballistic
It looks like someone is trying like Hell to keep his job. Whatever happened to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s promise of running a “clean and ethical” Congress???

ACORN Corruption Continues On…
It seems ACORN is up to their usual hijinks of breaking the law. This time, though, it involves aiding and abetting underage prostitution and exploitation.Yesterday, the story broke on Big Government about an ACORN clinic in Baltimore, Md., where James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles went uncover to expose the trafficking of young girls and tax evasion. ACORN receives billions from the federal government, and the illegal schemes still continue.
Watch the videos below to see ACORN and their slimy dealings:
Now they can add teaching tax evasion to “community organizing” and voter fraud. Will Congress investigate this and cut off the taxpayer funds that go to them? I wouldn’t bet on it.
UPDATE: O’Keefe and Giles did the same thing to the ACORN in D.C. Click here to watch the videos.
The Loudoun Planning Commission Manifesto
Right now, scandal is brewing in Loudoun County, and no doubt, FOIA requests are being filed into why a planning commission member from the Dulles District sent an e-mail asking other board members not to show up at a meeting to discuss countywide transportation. The Loudoun Times-Mirror was the first to report about this scandal on July 1st after a June 25th hearing was postponed due to not having the necessary amount of participants to call a quorum. The same thing happened on June 27th. This meeting was discussing a transportation plan that would have created new roads in Loudoun, and now, it has been delayed until next quarter. Sounds odd, doesn’t it? Considering that the planning commission member in question was involved in an anti-growth environmental group.
For several days, there have been numerous statements that have been released regarding this email. Sterling Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio released a statement that appeared in the Loudoun Times Mirror on Thursday, July 2, 2009. Delgaudio said:
“Anyone who orchestrates the disbanding of any government meeting or causes a meeting to be cancelled through any effort is to be condemned. I ask the board of supervisors to investigate and find out exactly how 2 separate meetings of the Planning Commission failed to achieve a quorum and that the board of supervisors, if necessary restore a sense of confidence that the Planning Commission continues to function.
In response to the statement made by some that “its only two meetings” and “the transportation plan can wait until September”, I can only state that as far as my position: it is intolerable and not acceptable for anyone to purposely encourage dereliction in their duty to perform their responsibilities at scheduled meetings.
Additionally, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, Scott York filed a FOIA request with Sandra Chaloux, the Dulles District Transportation Planning Board Member(Both the Washington Examiner and Loudoun Times Mirror have each filed a FOIA request as well into this matter) requesting any e-mails that she may have sent regarding the Planning Commission’s work session on the Countywide Transportation Plan.
This scandal only continues to unfold, but there are some questions that rise from this so-called manifesto. Is it illegal to tell a county employee not to show up to work (unless he or she has been terminated)? Can a county appointee or employee purposely not show up for a meeting, so there is not a quorum of members there to conduct a meeting? If anything, this is a shady way to govern.
Corruption…California Style
California Democrat Congresswoman Jane Harman was caught on tape offering to help a suspected Israeli agent in return for political support. Wow, doesn’t this sound treasonous? Most disturbingly, Harman has spent years on the House Intelligence Committee and was in line to become committee chairman. Harman was only waiting for Speaker Nancy Pelosi to give her the throne of the House Intelligence Committee, only for Pelosi to hand over the Committee leadership to Rep. Silvestre Reyes.
FOX News reported this news today, and it leaves me wondering whether or not Harman will come clear on her misdoings. Of course, coming out and denying things never helps your case.
How Low Can the Democrats Go?
No doubt, it appears that the Democrats will stop at nothing this election cycle, and their recent attacks on Bob McDonnell just show how low they will go in their attempts to keep the Governor’s Mansion. Just days before Easter, the Democratic Governors Association (or Common Sense Virginia…(senseless out-of-state idiots out to interfere in our business)) released a website called The Real Bob McDonnell, which attacks McDonnell’s religious beliefs. I keep asking myself this question, and I am wondering if you, the reader, are asking this question too…what does the candidate’s religion have to do with leading the Commonwealth of Virginia?
Geez, whatever happened to talking about the issues? I guess the Democrats are afraid to discuss the issues that Virginians want to hear, because they don’t have any substantial ideas to offer…just hot air!
Thankfully, you can read what Bob McDonnell will offer Virginia here and here. McDonnell offers innovative ideas to improve Virginia’s economy by working to create more jobs, provide a strong business environment, and allow workers to have the right to choose whether or not they want to join a union. Sounds a lot better than any of the Democrats running for Governor with their fluff economic plans, which involve raising taxes and spending more of our tax dollars on wasteful programs.

Rangel Gone Wild!
Geez, Rep. Charlie Rangel has a bad temper, and Jason Mattera (who is a personal friend) just happened to ask a question that spurned a cursing tirade. Jason asked about Rangel’s corrupt behavior and shady dealings. Rangel responded, “Why don’t you mind your (fill in the blank) business.”
Good job, Jason! Keep up the good work exposing one corrupt Democrat at a time. H/T Michelle Malkin.
