Tonight's Results from the 37th District

You can read my live blog post at Bearing Drift.

My overall thoughts are first to congratulate Steve Hunt for running an excellent race. While this race has not yet been finalized (due to the canvass), Hunt did a phenomenal job in the six weeks he had. Congratulations to Dave Marsden on his election to the State Senate. Marsden is my new State Senator, and I will be holding him accountable on this site for his actions during the General Assembly (just like any news sources).

Bob McDonnell released a statement congratulating Marsden on his victory.

“I want to congratulate Delegate Dave Marsden on his victory tonight. I look forward to continuing to work with him in the years ahead in his new capacity. In these tough economic times, Virginians need leaders in Richmond who will work together to create new jobs and more opportunities. While we may not agree on every issue, I know that Dave and I share a commitment to making this a better Virginia for all our citizens.

I also want to thank, and congratulate, Steve Hunt for the positive, idea-driven campaign he ran. Steve is a longtime advocate for the citizens of Fairfax County and I know he will continue to play an important role in the public life of Northern Virginia for years to come.”

Washington News Observer interviews Steve Hunt

Washington News Observer has a great video interview featuring Steve Hunt, who is running for State Senate in the 37th District. Hunt is a great candidate for this district, who will fight for fiscal responsibility, as well as upholding the Virginia Constitution. Hunt has been active in the community through various civic activities, and I can think of no one better to represent the 37th District.

Tomorrow, January 12th is the special election to fill the seat, and this interview should give you insight into Steve’s strong leadership and commitment to serve.

Steve Hunt Endorsed by Fairfax Deputy Sheriff Coalition

Today, Steve Hunt received the endorsement of the Fairfax Deputy Sheriff Coalition in the 37th State Senate race.

“We feel confident that Mr. Hunt will carry on Attorney General-Elect Cuccinelli’s long standing and strong record of working with law enforcement,” said Kevin Pittman, President of the Fairfax Deputy Sheriff’s Coalition Local 5016. “In doing this, law enforcement in Northern Virginia and throughout the Commonwealth will be better capable of keeping the public safe.”

“I am honored to have the support of the Fairfax Deputy Sheriff’s Coalition,” said Hunt. “In the State Senate, I will work to ensure Deputy Sheriffs and all law enforcement officers have the necessary training and resources to do their jobs safely and effectively.”

Aside from this endorsement, there is quite a bit of controversy surrounding Hunt’s opponent, Dave Marsden and his housing arrangements. Riley at Virginia Virtucon has a great article about Housing-gate and how Marsden’s rented room could have some potentially negative connotations. There is no doubt that Marsden’s carpetbagging was going to come back and haunt him.

Isophorone also has a great post up on Marsden and rent recycling. You know, pay $600 a month, and get a $300 contribution to your campaign.

VCDL-PAC Endorses Steve Hunt for Senate

Greg at Black Velvet Bruce Li reports on the recent endorsement for Steve Hunt in the 37th District Special Election to fill the open State Senate seat.

The Virginia Civil Defense League PAC endorsed Steve Hunt for State Senate.

The VCDL-PAC STRONGLY endorses Steve Hunt for election to Ken
Cuccinelli’s former Virginia Senate seat in the 37th District. Get out
and VOTE Tuesday, January 12 in the Special Election. Get INVOLVED
today by calling his campaign to ask how you can volunteer and join this
final push to keep this critical Senate seat pro-gun. Steve’s votes in
the Senate will benefit you wherever you live in Virginia.

With many major gun bills, both good and bad, coming up for vote
this January we MUST send a message to the General Assembly that your
rights aren’t negotiable.

Steve Hunt is a long time and outstanding supporter of Virginians’ right
to keep and bear arms. He has reached out to VCDL members by attending
and speaking at multiple meetings, and he has returned his VCDL survey
STRONGLY pro-gun.

It should be noted that his opponent has refused to answer the VCDL
Candidate Survey.

Steve’s campaign is organizing a final 12 day sprint and massive voter
mobilization in order to defend and win the Senate seat. This is an
important opportunity for YOU to make a REAL DIFFERENCE. Steve is
organizing a 72-hour task force for next weekend and has other efforts
we can help with. With our many super-motivated grassroots members from
all over the state, VCDL-PAC can have a significant positive impact on
this race, the upcoming Senate, and the future of our gun rights in
Virginia.

This is great news for Hunt, as he solidly supports our Second Amendment rights and will continue to fight for these rights in Richmond. You can find out more about his campaign here.

A Study in Contrasts

Here’s the wrong way to write a thank you note to your supporters after you lose an election or withdraw:

“I wanted to let you all know I’ve decided to end my campaign for the 11th congressional district seat in Virginia. This is one of the hardest decisions I’ve had to make because I am not a quitter and doing so feels like quitting.

It has become apparent this week that the Virginia Republican party wants a self-funding candidate. I would have thought as a party we could have seen that in recent elections self-funding doesn’t mean a candidate can buy the election. We saw this most recently in the Democratic Gubernatorial primary race where self-funding was trumped by message and ideas. We went down this road in 2008 and we lost badly. I hope in 2010 the results are different.

I cannot thank you enough for your early support. I plan to stay involved and work to ensure we elect a good crop of delegate candidates this November. If you want to get involved in helping join the OurVirginiaNow Facebook group.

Paul Miller’s letter to his supporters.

Here is the more graceful and right way to write to your supporters after losing an election or withdrawing:

As you know, last night Steve Hunt was elected as the Republican nominee for the special election to replace Ken Cuccinelli on January 12th. To Steve, I send my sincere congratulations and thanks for a positive campaign focused on the issues that are important to Northern Virginia.

Thank you for all your support over the last month. Penny and I enjoyed spending time with many of you and very much appreciate your encouragement, your good advice and your prayers. I am very proud of what we accomplished and am humbled by the generous donations and 100′s of volunteer hours that were given to the effort. God has blessed us with tremendous friends – both old and new – and we extend our deep thanks to all of you!

Now our job is to get behind Steve Hunt and to ensure that he is the next State Senator from the 37th District.

We are all behind you, Steve!

On to victory!

Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia Endorses Steve Hunt for State Senate

Today, the Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia endorsed Steve Hunt in the 37th State Senate race.  Hunt is definitely the best candidate for this seat, which was held by Ken Cuccinelli, and includes Centreville, parts of Burke, and parts of Fairfax.  Hunt definitely adheres to the core principles of standing strong for individual liberty, free enterprise, and limited government.  Tomorrow from 6-10 p.m. at Centreville High School, I strongly encourage you to vote for a candidate, who is principled and will fight for these core principles.  Steve Hunt will make a fabulous State Senator.

Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia Endorses Steve Hunt in the 37th State Senate Special Election
Hunt is the liberty minded choice in the Special Election to fill Ken Cuccinelli’s seat.

Centreville, Va.–Members of the Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia have endorsed Steve Hunt in the Republican firehouse primary, which will be taking place on December 1, 2009 at Centreville High School from 6-10 p.m.   This is to fill the open seat that was previously held by Ken Cuccinelli.  Hunt is the only Republican candidate, who will fight for the principles of limited government and lower taxes.

Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia Chairman Matthew Gagnon said, “Ken Cuccinelli was an important advocate for liberty in the Virginia Senate, and it is vitally important that his replacement continue to champion those same values–specifically limited government, free enterprise, low taxes and personal freedom.  Steve Hunt is such a person, and the Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia strongly believes in his candidacy.  We enthusiastically endorse Mr. Hunt, and will work hard to see him elected.”

The Republican Liberty Caucus of Virginia was chartered in 2007 and has worked tirelessly throughout the Commonwealth to promote the principles of individual liberty, personal responsibility, and limited government within the Republican Party.
