John McCain needs to pick a solid conservative to join him on the Presidential ticket. This conservative needs to hold strong views on social issues (like abortion and family issues) and fiscal issues (like controlling government spending, reducing taxes, and earmark reform). There are several politicians who come to mind when holding these views.
One of them is Oklahoma U.S. Senator Tom Coburn. Coburn is a strong social and fiscal conservative who will add to the ticket. He stands firm in his opposition to wasteful government programs and wants to hold the Federal government accountable for their wasteful spending. Additionally, he is staunchly pro-life and pro-family. If McCain selects Coburn, this will unite and rally the conservatives behind his race. Right now, there are many conservatives who are not enthusiastic about a McCain presidency (and I remained negative until I had a reality check recently about how voting for a third party would throw this election towards Obama), and conservatives want someone who will add strength behind McCain’s moderate leaning stances.
Coburn’s name is being floated around the blogosphere. The Right Wing Liberal indicated that Coburn is stepping up to the plate and opposing “Dirty Harry’s” Omnibus Spending Bill and he is not backing down. Not just this, but Dr. No (as Coburn is often referred to) will not back down on principle. This only adds to my support for a McCain/Coburn ticket.
I know that there are several things that factor into the selection of a Vice President. Can they bring in the donations? Does he/she have superstar potential? Do they have chemistry with the Presidential candidate? The list can go on and on. In a crucial election year, such as this one, we can not rely on this list as much. We need to select someone who will add conservative balance to McCain.
